Friuli
Friuli–Venezia Giulia lies in extreme northeastern Italy, with Slovenia bordering it on the east and Austria on the north. Its capital and largest city is Trieste. In the wine world, Friuli–Venezia Giulia is best known for white wines made from such varieties as Pinot Grigio and Friulano. It has 4 DOCGs, 12 DOCs (see map), and 3 IGPs. In 2017, Friuli–Venezia Giulia produced 1.6 million hl (18.2 million cases) of wine, 77% of it white—one of the highest proportions of white wine of any region. The region’s primary grape varieties are Pinot Grigio (26%), Merlot (15%), and Friulano (9%).
