Abruzzo
Abruzzo is located halfway down the Italian peninsula, across the Apennine range east of Rome. Its capital is L’Aquila and its largest city is Pescara. In the wine world, Abruzzo is best known as the home of the Montepulciano grape. It has two DOCGs, seven DOCs (see map), and eight IGPs. In 2017, Abruzzo was one of the few Italian regions that was unaffected by bad weather, increasing its output to more than 3 million hl (34.6 million cases) of wine, 58% of it red and almost a third at the DOP level. The region’s primary grape varieties are Montepulciano (57%) and Trebbiano (29%).
